Principles – «Points of Strength» Saturday 14th of January, 2017

In few days, Egyptians are to celebrate Epiphany; a major Christian feast. We beseech God to keep the peace of Egypt, Middle East and the entire world and ask Him to console all the mournful-hearted who lost a dear person martyred by terrorism.

Epiphany reminds us of Prophet John the Baptist who was martyred for the sake of truth. This great prophet who was called great before God manifested many points of strength since his birth when the angel had brought the good tidings to his father, Zacharias the priest as it is written “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink.” Jesus Christ Himself has witnessed that among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist.

Humility was his point of strength. Since his birth to the beginning of his service, he led an ascetic life worshiping God. He never sought praise or appreciation and has never wished to lead a lofty life. He also ran off fame and dignity as people came to him to gain redemption and be baptized by him. He ate and dressed plainly. Moreover, when people thought that he is the Messiah, he answered decisively that he was not and he bore Him a testimony saying, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

He was also distinguished for “declaring the truth” for all. He declared to the people that they were living a sinful life and so distant from God that they eventually perish. His message to them was to repent and forsake their sins and evil deeds and turn to do works of mercy. He was never afraid of the authority and powerfulness of Herod the king. On the contrary, he declared to him the message of truth. Though, He realized that declaring the truth may cost him his life, he remained steadfast and repeatedly declared “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” Declaring the truth is connected with justice, as a just person adheres to the truth.

Humbleness and declaring the truth are two points of strength in the life of John the Baptist. Humbleness made him extremely satisfied with his close relation with God and in no need for any worldly thing. He did his role honestly, thus he gained strength that is not from this world. The truth he knew and declared turned to immutable powerful voice over ages.
