On the evening of Saturday, November 18, 2017, elMuharraq monastery in Al-Qusiya, Assiut, witnessed the Enthronement ceremony of His Eminence Bishop Bigol, new Bishop and Abbot of elMuharraq, replacing His Eminence late Bishop Sawiris, who departed on 17 July.
The vesper prayer of Bishop Bigol Enthronement ceremony was attended by 22 bishops and Metropolitans, including Their Eminences Bishop Ermia, General Bishop and head of the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Center, Bishop Youannes, Bishop of Assiut, Bishop Kyrillos William, Bishop of Assiut for Coptic Catholics and thousands of priests, monks and church congregation. While the Enthronement prayer was attended by Brigadier General Yasser Al Desouki, Governor of Assiut, Major General Gamal Shokr, Director of Security, Maj. Gen. Khalid Riad, Inspector of National Security Investigations, and a number of public figures, political, executive and security leaderships in the Governorate.
It is worth mentioning that His Grace Bishop Bigol, was ordained as Bishop of Rezekt Al-Deir, Ezbat Toma and Abbot of St Mary elMuharraq Monastery, by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and 102 of the church’s Pontiffs at St. Bishoy monastery in Wadi El Natroun, with three other Bishops on November 12, 2017.
This monastery was established in the fourth century AD on the western mountain slope and is one of the 26 places visited by the Holy Family in Egypt, the monastery had a great position in the Coptic church. It had an abandoned mud brick house and with a roof made of palm fronds where the Holy Family rested for about 185 days after hardship of travel. An ancient church was built in the place of the house, and is consider the oldest church inaugurated in the Christian world.
